SAMHAIN CEREMONY Sweeping The Space
“I sweep the temple clean in honor of the Gods and our Ancestry.
Let no evil enter here, where only blessings comfort thee and me.
So mote it be!”
Sweep the space three times, walk to the center and turn the broom
upside down and tap it three times like a staff.
“The Temple is clean! Let the Rites begin!”
 
Casting the Circle
HP - Cast 3 times with Samhain Staff saying,
“I cast the circle thrice about to keep all evil out.”
Stand center and tap the Samhain staff 3 times. Then say,
“This is now a time, that is not a time,
In a place, that is not a place.
On a day, that is not a day.
May the Gods and the Spirits of our Ancestors Find this ritual pleasing.
So Mote it Be!”
 
Blessing of the Altar
HP - Light the protection candle then hold hands over it saying,
“Beings of Fire, be blessed by the Ancient ones, at this time when the veil
between the worlds is thinnest.”
 
Light incense off protection candle and hold hands over incense.
“Beings of Air, be blessed by the Ancient ones, at this time when the veil between
the worlds is thinnest.”
 
HPS - Hold your hands over the salt and say.
“Beings of Earth, be blessed by the Ancient ones, at this time when the veil
between the worlds is thinnest.”
 
Add three pinches of salt to the water and stir while saying
“Salt and water I conjure thee, be ye filled with blessings from the Gods and our
Ancestry! That where your cast all evil flee.
And as I will So Mote it Be!”
 
Casting the Great Banishing Pentacle
 
HPS - Take the Pentacle stance (athame in right hand) and say,
“By the powers of the Ancients that live on and flow through us, generation after
generation, I banish all evil and adversity from this sacred space.”
Draw Banishing Pentacle with athame, point to the center and say, “So mote it be.” Calling the Directions
 
*West - Light blue candle. Receive goblet from HPS and Staff from HP. Stand West.
Salute west with the goblet and tap the Staff thrice, saying, “Hear me, O
Guardians of the watch towers of the west and beings of water. We call to thee to
protect and guard this sacred circle. As the waters of midgaurd flow to and from
the great river, Styx and the World of the Dead. You bring our ancestors to us
cradled on your gentle waves. Blessed be.” Walk the circle, sprinkling water then
return the goblet and staff to the altar.
 
*North - Light green candle. Receive pentacle from HPS and Staff from HP. Stand
North. Salute north with pentacle and tap Staff thrice, saying, “Hear me, O
Guardians of the watch towers of the north and beings of earth. We call to thee to
protect and guard this sacred circle. As the soil of Mother Earth embraces the
shells of those that have gone before so shall she embrace us and bring our
ancestors closer to us this night. Blessed be.” Walk the circle and return tools.
 
*East - Light yellow candle. Receive incense from HPS and Staff from HP. Stand
East. Salute east with the incense and tap Staff thrice saying, “Hear me, O
Guardians of the watch towers of the east and beings of air. We call to thee to
protect and guard this sacred circle. As the voices of our ancestors whisper to us
on the winds that rustle through the trees, now blow them here to join us on this
sacred night. Blessed be.” Walk the circle and return tools.
 
South - Light red candle. Receive the candle from HPS and Staff from HP. Stand
South. Salute south with candle and tap Staff thrice saying, “Hear me, O Guardians
of the watch towers of the south and beings of fire. We call to thee to protect
and guard this sacred circle. As the flames of purification burn away all pain and
earthly concerns from the souls that are reborn into the Underworld, so shall it
spark an ember here so that our ancestors may join us on this sacred night.
Blessed be.” Walk the circle and return tools. Lighting of the Spirit Flame
Flame Keeper - Light cauldron Flame and say, “We invoke thee Ancient Spirit Flame
into this physical flame. O eternal doorway between the worlds. This is now the
spirit flame that burned before the beginning of time. This is now the flame that
burned before the birth of the material world, and this is now the Ethereal flame
that burns here this Hallowed Eve. May it connect us in love and hope with our
ancestors and the spirits of those who have loved us from our first spark of life.
Blessed be.”
 
HPS states: “O thou sisters and brothers of the ancient Craft. This night in ages
past, was celebrated as the years ending. On Samhain’s eve, is when the sylphs,
undines, salamanders, gnomes and spirits of the woods were free to roam
everywhere. Just as they are on this night. But let it be known above all, that on
All Hallow’s eve, the mighty dead, our beloved Ancestors, return from their graves
and join us, here, in reverence and revelry.”
 
Evoking the God and Goddess
HPS - Light Goddess Candle saying, “I call to thee in honor and love; Oya -
Goddess of the Cemetary, Morrigan - Mistress of Magick, Cerridwen - Keeper of the
Cauldron, and Persephone - Queen of the Underworld. Hear me all loving Dark
Mothers that embrace the Spirit after the body has died. We honor you this night
and ask for your presence here among your children. Blessed be.”
 
HP - Light God Candle saying, “I call to thee in honor and love; Chongo - God of
Thunder, Osiris - Risen God of the Dead, Anubis - Messenger Between the Worlds,
Archangel Michael - Weigher of Souls, and Cernunnos - God of the Underworld. Hear
me all Dark Gods that lovingly accept the souls of the dead into their realms and
aid them on their way. We honor you this night and ask for your presence here
among your children. Blessed be.”
 
HP- “Dark Lords and Ladies of the Shadows, Gods and Goddesses of life. You give
life and yet in ye, is the knowledge of death. Open wide, I pray this, the gates
through which all must pass. Let our dear ones who have gone before return this
night to make merry with us. And when our time comes, as it must, O thou
comforters, counselors, givers of peace and rest, we will enter thy realms gladly
and unafraid. For we know that when rested and refreshed among our dear ones, we
will be reborn again by thy grace. Let us now be in the same place and the same
time as our beloved ones. And may we meet and know and remember and love them once
again. Blessed be.”
 
Casting old ways in Spirit Flame
Each writes something to be rid of to better
themselves for the new year. Then walks to the cauldron and says: “Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust, into your loving hands we now entrust, this prayer, this spell, this
banishing, that we may be born anew. Blessed be.”
Then throw the paper into the spirit flame.
 
Reading Spirit Messages
Cigar smoke is blown on the tarot deck. Hold hands over
tarot saying, “Ancients from the underworld, please give us your strength and
guidance. O Grandmothers and Grandfathers, empower these cards with messages of
what is needed to better our lives for the coming year. Blessed Be” The cards are
passed out and interpreted.
 
Cakes and Ale
HPS - holds hands over cakes and ale saying: “Mother darksome and
divine, bless these cakes and bless this wine. With health, wealth and prosperity,
the Sacred three and as I will, so mote it be!” HPS adds cookie to the God’s dish
saying, “The first bite goes to the Divine.” HPS pours beverage next saying, “As
does the first drink of wine.” HPS adds cookie to spirit’s dish saying, “The
second bite is for the ancestors that have joined us for this sacred rite.” HPS
pour beverage into Spirit dish saying, “And unto them we give the second drink of
Samhain night” Pass Cakes and ale saying “May you never hunger, may you never
thirst, and may your love for life be strong”

Closing Circle:
HPS and HP - “Thanks be to all the shadow Lords and Ladies and to the Goddesses
and Gods of the Underworld. You have gifted us with your blessings and your
presence on this Samhain night. Stay if you will, go if you must, but know that
thou art forever in our hearts.” Extinguish the God and Goddess candle.
 
Extinguishing the Spirit Flame:
Flame Keeper - “By the spirit flame’s radiant blue light, our loved ones and
ancestors came to celebrate with us tonight. But now, as this rite has come to an
end, we say goodbye to our loving family and friends. Let the sacred flame no
longer burn here on the material plane. Yet ever will it continue to burn ethereal
and eternal in the spirit world. Blessed Be.” Extinguish the Spirit Flame
 
Releasing the Directions
 
*South - Face South and salute saying, “Hear me, O Guardians of the Watchtower of
the South and Spirits of Fire. We thank thee for thou flame of passion and
creativity. May there always be peace between thee and we, even as you return to
your fiery abode. Blessed Be”
 
Extinguish Red Candle.
 
*East - Face East and salute saying, “Hear me, O Guardian of the Watchtower of the
East and Spirits of Air. We thank thee for thou winds of inspiration and the
breath of life. May there always be peace between thee and we, as you return to
your airy abode. Blessed be”
 
Extinguish Yellow Candle
 
*North - Face North and salute saying, “Hear me, O Guardians of the Watchtower of
the North and Spirits of Earth. We thank thee for thou bountiful fruits and
stability. May there always be peace between thee and we, as you return to your
earthen abode.”
 
Extinguish green candle
 
*West - Face West and salute saying, “Hear me, O Guardians of the Watchtower of
the West and Spirits of Water. We thank thee for thou flowing love and compassion.
May there always be peace between thee and we, even though you return to your
watery abode.”
 
Extinguish blue candle.
 
HP - extinguishes the protection candle and open the circle by walking thrice
widdershins with the Staff. He walks center and taps the staff thrice proclaiming,
“The circle is now open, yet never broken, May the peace of the Gods be ever in
your heart.”
 
HPS and HP - “Merry Meet, Merry Part,”
 
All - “And Merry Meet again.”
 
HPS - “This Rite is ended! Let the feasting begin!”
